Silk Painting

Painting on silk is an ancient and challenging discipline.  I have tried many different art forms, but have stuck with this one for over 14 years.  I feel it still has much to teach me- like patience! Unlike traditional painting methods where an artist can layer colors until the desired result is achieved, with silk painting, once the dyes fuse with the fabric, color selections become permanent and irreversible.

Painted silk has been found in China as far back as 165 BC.  It spread from China to Japan, Russia, India, Indonesia and France; developing many techniques along the way.

I employ both the traditional and experimental, including Serti, Rozome, batik and painterly styles.  I use enzymes, guttas, resists and dyes, then steam the silk at high heat causing a chemical reaction.  The color and the silk fuse into one thing and can never be separated.  It has a sensuality and aliveness that is far different from conventional canvas and lends itself to these biomorphic abstracts.

My current collection is a meditation on living things, both real and imagined.  In my studio (laboratory) the canvases serve as petri dishes for new beginnings, intended to contribute to the healing of our planet’s imbalances.  I seek to draw attention to the urgent need to respect and protect nature.  During these exchanges I explore subjects such as: ocean-life, viruses, botany, genetics, water issues, GNO’s, the body overpopulation, etc.
